Art Experience for the Elementary Teacher

This course focuses on the integration of the visual arts into the classroom as a means to facilitate learning in all subjects/fields.

Elementary Certification Master’s Program (ECMP)

ECMP is an intense three semester program that prepares teacher candidates from variety of backgrounds transition to teach in elementary classrooms. My role as teacher candidate supervisor and course instructor gives me an opportunity to work closely with candidates in the field and in the classroom.

 Teaching All Learners Program

As a supervisor for the Teaching All Learners (TAL) program, I will work with students as they are initially introduced to urban classroom settings. This immersive component of the program provides opportunities for pre-service teachers to work with children with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.  My role as pre-service teacher  supervisor gives me an opportunity to work closely with candidates in the field as they initially get acquainted with the teaching field.

Spring 2013

Community of Teachers: Supervising Teacher Candidates.  Teach Candidates are participants in an innovative program called Community of Teachers (CoT). CoT is designed so students can foster long term relationships with professional teachers in the field. They are immersed in the classroom for three semesters – while collecting data and samples of their work to compile in a portfolio. According to the program’s website, “The teaching competencies are based on national standards set forth in the Interstate New Teacher Assessment Standards Consortium (INTASC)” (Community of Teachers). I am excited and fortunate to have this opportunity.

Spring 2009 – Fall 2011

Student-Teacher Supervision

Indiana University – Cultural Immersion Overseas Projects (EDUC M550), 2010-2011

As a previous participant in the Indiana University’s Cultural Immersion Project, I wanted to give back to this project by working as a supervisor and assistant instructor. I was fortunate that a position was vacated the year I was accepted to the Curriculum Studies PhD program. The Cultural Immersion Project is a world renowned student teaching program, which places student teachers in schools to teach “in culturally diverse settings that include Chicago, the American Southwest, and 17 countries around the world” (Cultural Immersion Projects).

This student teaching program has been awarded several awards, as noted on their website:
The cultural immersion programs are recognized as some of the most rigorous and innovative study abroad experiences available:

The International Awards for Innovative Practices in Higher Education
The Goldman Sachs Foundation Prizes for Excellence in International Education
The AACTE’s Best Practice Award for Global and International Teacher Education

As a supervisor and assistant instructor for the Cultural Immersion Projects for three semesters, I was afforded opportunities to supervise student teachers in their field placements, advise and teach them prior to their placement overseas, and supervise them while placed in their student teaching placements overseas.
